I have a question for you......

Hello Everyone in Tatland

First off I must say ``that I am NOT a designer``. This past weekend I was sitting in my craft room with nothing in mind to tat. My hubby was away, up north helping a friend out. My housework done and tubs of thread looking at me, wanting something to be made of it.
So I took a deep breath and jumped in with two feet. I came across a vintage edging pattern and with a little change here and there I came up with this! Not an edging anymore but a necklace. This was a brave move for me. I am the type that sticks with a pattern and would not think about changing it!!!

But things get better. I took this new necklace with me to work and stopped at a little bridal shop and she is interested in selling some tatted items!!!!

My first question for you is what price do you put on items like this.....I used Lizbeth size 20 and it took about 2 hours to make. I do have plans to make earrings to go with the necklace. I never charge what I should!!!

Also I purchased these two hankies for only $1 each and am not sure if I tat the edging first and then sew it on or attach it as one tats...
What do you do....

Any help would be great.

Have a good week everyone!!!!!!!!
Tatfully Yours Kelly

  1. Don't undervalue your labor. You can start with the lowest wage you feel comfortable with per hour and multiply by hours - just for the labor. You still have findings to put on it, I see. Add in the cost of your materials and then add in a healthy percentage of overhead. Look at what it adds up to. How do you feel about it? How will you feel about it after you've done it 50 times? :-) When you are counting your labor, include winding the shuttles (or in your case preparing the needles) and the time it takes to pin it to a blocking board and put the findings on it and package it. Those are all part of the labor! Bridal shop? They expect to pay a good price for something memorable.

  6. I don't know about pricing, however there is a great book about crafting businesses that I bought a while back. It's called "Crafty Superstar," and has a chapter devoted to pricing and how to decide what to charge.

Just a thought -- I picked it up in B&N, read several chapters in store before I bought.

  7. It is beautiful. I hope you can get a price that you are comfortable with. I often find that people don't value handwork as much as they should. It is a shame, really, why would you want something that everyone else has? But, I have always been "atypical" (and, sometimes, proud of it).
